I appreciate your feedback Tim, going to order some Ni80, and try to compare/contrast.
Whats RDL? Some kind of dripper?
The coil I have in my Supreme v3 is Ni80 and that tastes pretty good but not even close to the titan but as SD said:
Lookâs good. Is Ti hard to work with or something?
I find TI harder to work with, but easier than SS.
Interesting. They all seem to prefer the SS. They arenât lying about the ramp up time of kanthal though. I have noticed that for sure. On my titan I have to hold the fire button for a good 3-4 secs before it gets going properly but thatâs really not an issue for me.
On forums and amongst who I talk too SS isnât that popular, only in the use for TC but before I even clicked on the link I thought everyone will prefer SS because itâs Reddit!!!
How does Ni80 compare to kanthal with regards to wattage?
Apart from when I am testing atties that perform best at higher wattage by choice i am quite a low wattage vaper between 14W up to about 40w and I find Ni80 has the edge but going from @SessionDrummer experience maybe Kanthal comes more into itâs own at higher wattages!
Not so sure about that actually. I am in the middle of reading one of the links above that SD posted yesterday and have literally just read this bit when you posted the above:
The primary quality of nichrome that makes it attractive for vaping is the fact that, for a given gauge of wire, nichrome has a lower resistance than kanthal. That means itâll operate at a higher wattage, and it also means itâll heat up more quickly than a similar kanthal coil.
âCompared to kanthal, nichrome has two small drawbacks. The first drawback is that a few people suffer from nickel allergies. If thatâs true of you, youâll want to avoid using nichrome coils. The other factor that you should be aware of when using nichrome is that you canât dry burn a nichrome coil as aggressively as you can a kanthal coil. If you heat a nichrome coil until it glows bright red, the metal may break.â
Doesnât mean that Ni80 gives better flavour than Kanthal at higher wattage!
I havenât read anything about flavour yet in the article Iâm looking at
You only have to look at most pre-wound commercially available coils, MTL tend to be Ni80 or SS and vaping with a 0.6ohm - 0.8ohm with MTL is the norm when a few years back it would be Kanthal at 1.2 -1.6ohm and to the other extreme most commercial stock coils I come across rated for very high wattage tend to be Kanthal rather than Ni80!
I was referring to SDâs words you posted, to me performance is flavour being into flavour rather than clouds so if Ni80 can handle higher wattage to me itâs pointless if itâs not giving the kind of flavour it does at lower wattages!
I agree completely with that. I really donât get the thing with people wanting huge clouds. Iâd rather take better flavour and have zero clouds all day long. That being said, I do prefer a higher wattage but not for clouds. My titan is currently running at 82w/0.15ohms with the 2 coils I posted pics of and that is the wattage I have settled on for now based on the amount of flavour vs how hot a vape it is.
Also:
âwhile flavor is very subjective, many vapers that try nichrome or stainless steel swear that they get better flavor than they did with their previous Kanthal builds.â
âThe original Clapton coil was conceived by ECF veteran mrdee3 while watching his friend playing the guitar. He created it by winding a 32-gauge strand around a 24-gauge core using an electric drill. It looks just like a guitar string and the name pays tribute to the guitarist Eric Clapton.â
Well whoâd have thunk it!
This is a very interesting and educational read SD, thanks!
YES !!!
If the flavor isnât there, WHATâS the point ?? !!!
Same, same.
I think the days of Clouding Clouders is fading. I donât see it out hardly ever. It just doesnât seem as common as it used to be. Maybe Pods, maybe Juuls, maybe overclouding just ran out of gas.
I still do, but itâs only because thereâs flavor underneath all the clouds.
