ThunderCloud & Mike Vapes Blaze Dual RDA Review

Introduction

ThunderCloud, a new company formed by former owners of Thunderhead Creations, has officially entered the market with its first product release. Teaming up with the renowned reviewer and designer Mike Vapes, they have launched the Blaze Dual RDA—a dual-coil rebuildable dripping atomizer featuring the signature smooth airflow that Mike Vapes is known for in his designs.

Let’s have a closer look at what this new collaboration brings to the table!

Box Contents

The Blaze Dual RDA comes well-presented in a metal box, wrapped in a cardboard. A small sticker on the packaging indicates the colour of the RDA inside, This type of packaging gives off a premium touch, showing that ThunderCloud is paying attention to both presentation and protection right from the start.

Inside the Blaze Dual RDA package, you get a comprehensive kit that includes everything needed to get started:

Colour Options

I was sent the Purple colour for review, that comes with a handy 510 threaded atty stand for storing the RDA,

Additionally, the Blaze dual comes in 3 other different colours, Pink, Gunmetal, and Matte Black

Design

Starting up top, The included wide bore 810 drip tip is secured in the top cap via an integrated rubber O-ring, The top cap rotates within the sleeve to adjust the stepped side airflow, notches on the top cap and cut-outs in the deck gives the blaze a locking system. Good to see this feature, as it makes it easier to both adjust the AFC and remove the rda from a mod without any hassles.

On one the side of the rda the Blaze branding is subtly etched onto the sleeve, The rda is 24 mm in diameter, but with the included 25 mm beauty ring, you can swap and change to suit that look that you’re after. The included beauty rings screw onto the rda from the bottom, this is a first that I know of and a nice bit of innovation.

On the bottom, you have some TC X Mike Vapes branding and a protruding gold-plated 510 pin,

The side airflow can be adjusted to a number of settings, allowing you to fine tune your draw.

Build Deck

The Blaze Dual RDA features a postless build deck with 4 post holes and gold-plated flat head screws to hold your coils in place. Chamfered edges on each side of the 510 area will help e-liquid
make its way down to the wicking well. A chunky peak insulator is visible separating both posts.

A bigger opening between wrap around honeycomb air-intake posts measuring 13.5 mm. These posts have 10 openings on each side, allowing plenty of airflow to your coils.

The top cap and barrel are held firmly in place with a single O-ring, the tolerances here are very good, fitting the top cap on the deck gives a satisfying snap into place.

Coil Build

The build process begins with the included coils set of Blaze branded 3-Core Clapton coils.

They are 3 mm in diameter.

The recommended length to cut this is 7 mm on the coiling toll provided.

Installing the coils in the deck is straightforward and hassle-free process.

After dry burning them in, the build come out to 0.17 Ohms.

Wicking

No cotton included, Muji pads trimmed and threaded in and trimmed.

Fluffed out and tucked into the wicking wells

Time to get this build soaked up and ready to vape.

Performance

I started out with this 0.17 Ohm build running at 100 Watts. The honeycomb airflow system provides a smooth and turbulence-free draw. The bridge-style airflow deck directs air under and around the coils, and this airflow design allows for great flavour production. The aluminium or stainless steel construction helps dissipate heat efficiently, preventing the RDA from becoming too hot even at higher wattages. Huge vapour production is impressive, while cloud chasers can push it higher for thicker, denser clouds using more exotic coils.

Squonking

Swapping out the squonk pin with the included allen key tool

The Blaze Dual capacity is 2 ml, so I prefer to use in squonk mode, With the 2ml juice well, squonking is definitely the better option to avoid constantly dripping. The honeycomb airflow sits high, it helps prevent leaking as long as you don’t over-squonk, or tilt the rda aggressively.

Being 24/25 mm in diameter, the Blaze Dual is well suited on a mech mod too, the 0.17 build hits hard while staying in a safe range. Closing off the top row of the airflow tightens the draw and intensifies flavour.

Verdict

ThunderCloud’s debut release, the Blaze Dual RDA, comes with the design influence of Mike Vapes, bringing experience-driven innovation to the table. This collaboration has resulted in a well-executed and versatile RDA. The classic honeycomb airflow delivers smooth and turbulence-free draws, The build deck is well-designed, making coil installation hassle-free, and the locking top cap is a nice touch for easy airflow adjustments. It squonk’s well, keeping the wick saturated without over-squonking issues. It looks and performs great on a mech mod too with the included beauty ring to increase the size.

I would like to thank ThunderCloud for sending the Blaze Dual over for review, and I hope you enjoyed reading my thoughts on this one. For more information on the Blaze Dual head over to the ThunderCloud website

Great review DD - lots of great info. I love honeycomb airflow, condensed chambers, and LOVE the ability to step down airflow one hole at a time. This deck looks very Recurve-esque to me. The only minor cosmetic issue for me is that I don’t care for matte finishes in general. Great review man.

That was a GREAT review @Daredevil.

I couldn’t help but notice the similarities between the Blaze Dual and the Tauren.

@CaptainKirk Thank you, Yeah Mike did say in the presentation video the deck was basically a remake of the recurve, with some improvements. The flavour intensifies when you close in down some.

@SessionDrummer Thanks SD, Some visual similarities yes but two completely different airflow concepts producing different experience, The size difference, draw, and how it hits is distinctively noticeable.
